Our Focus

The Nacani Sweetgrass Foundation is a South Carolina–based nonprofit organization established to advance community economic development and preserve the cultural heritage of the Gullah Geechee people through place-based investment, education, and community-centered development.

Rooted in the history and living traditions of the Gullah Geechee community, the Foundation serves as the steward and owner of key community assets, including a cultural center, workforce housing, and community development spaces. These assets are designed to ensure that cultural preservation and economic opportunity grow together—protecting heritage while creating sustainable pathways for local residents to live, work, and thrive in their own community.

❋ Cultural Preservation and Education

Interpreting, preserving, and sharing Gullah Geechee history, traditions, and storytelling through exhibitions, programming, and educational initiatives.

❋ Community and Economic Development

Supporting economic stability and opportunity through workforce housing, education, and culturally grounded development initiatives.

❋ Place-Based Asset Ownership

Owning and operating facilities that serve the public interest and anchor long-term community benefit.

❋ Collaborative Partnerships

Working with public agencies, philanthropic partners, and mission-aligned for-profit entities through transparent, arm’s-length agreements that advance the Foundation’s charitable mission.

Through its integrated approach—combining cultural stewardship, economic development, and responsible asset ownership—the Nacani Sweetgrass Foundation seeks to honor the past, empower the present, and build a sustainable future for generations to come.
